I have a question: how do you distinguish between a Brazillian and a Portuguese coin of that era, or one of the other colonies ?

A Portuguese 40 Reis of this era would have Joâo VI on the obverse. The reverse depicts a similar globe and the denomination.

Quote: I have a question: how do you distinguish between a Brazillian and a Portuguese coin of that era, or one of the other colonies ? That's a good question. Since they didn't explicitly state the country sometimes you have to browse through the "Motherland" and the colonies to see the distinctive features. This coin is actually listed under Mozambique, KM# 19, one year type. The Brazilian coins of that era favored denomination in Roman numerals, at least for the 40 reis.

My Krause catalog is a few years old, but the prices listed shouldn't be off by much. It lists at $16 in Fine and $50 in VF. Not sure how to grade this coin, but if I had to guess I would say Fine, borderline VF. A mintage figure is not listed. Very nice coin, by the way!

In a Brazilian catalog, a Fine one of this coin is around U$28.00.
You can distinguish one colony from another by identifying the 'monetary letters' that indicates where the coin was made, talking about Brazil.

Question: "I have a question: how do you distinguish between a Brazillian and a Portuguese coin of that era, or one of the other colonies ?"
Answer - Read a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins and you can see illustrations of both types. Remember "Buy the book before the coin!" SCWC older editions are selling fairly cheap on e**y, and the older editions are fine for older issues. I have the same copy of my KM South Asian that I bought in 1997 and use it regularly.
