Australian currency tradeds pretty much straight up with U.S. currency, dollar for dollar. That said the only way you can spend it is to go to Austrailia and buy something. Banks and foreign exchange places only do paper money. Most coin dealers will buy them at a 25-30% discount of their exchange value and wholesale them out. Your coin is an aussie 10c

You will notice a little 'SD' near the bottom of the reverse on the RHS.
Those initials stand for Stuart Devlin, he designed the reverses for the definitives for all denominations issued from 1966, and still currently issued today, 46 years later.

He is now retired, but used to be the appointed Goldsmith to H.M. Queen Elizabeth 11. I have spoken with him on a couple of occasions on coinage design and gemcutting.

In 1966 this coin replaced the one shilling at par. And the image is a lyer bird, it has a beutiful sound and can copy almost anything it hears, even chain saws and cars, but mainly other birds.

You wouldnt get any more than 10c, not even 15c. Keep it and use it as a start to an Australian collection though. We have many interesting coins to collect!

if you are looking for great looking australian coins try the predecimal florins or the other silver predecimal coins they are just beautiful although the highlights in my eyes are the florins and the crowns:) good luck with the collecting:)
