I just read in another forum that no privy coin has ever received an MS70 grade. Can anyone verify this or explain why this would be?

The post and my response:

I just check the PCGS POP report for ALL Maple Leafs with Privy marks... I think I am reading it right, but PCGS HAS NEVER given a 70 grade to any Maple Leaf with Privy mark!

That's very interesting, isn't it? I wonder what the rationale is behind this? The RCM put out a ton of privy coins over the years. It's amazing that none of them ever rated an MS70. Is it something about the SML design process itself? I'm going to ask the people over on the Canada NCLT forum if they have any insight into the reason behind the tough grading on privy coins and see if they can shed some light on this.

Just out of interest I went on ebay and searched for PCGS MS70 under Coins and got 602 hits. Added the word Maple and got 2 hits; 1 platinum and 1 gold. Change it to ICCS and you get nothing back for MS70, PR70, PF70, PL70 or SP70. Maybe most SMLs are graded by ICCS and ICCS doesn't give out 70's?

Take this with a grain of salt as I don't really know how to grade myself (although I wanna learn), but I read that a grade of 70 is supposedly "theoretical" perfection, and that it isn't used. Now obviously there ARE 70's floating around, but maybe like kuh said, ICCS subscribes to the thought that there are no "perfect" coins. It's what leads me to believe that he's on the right track with his line of thinking.

Interesting. Like you said, silver+NGC70+Canada=0 Silver+NGC69+Canada=51 Silver+NGC69+Canada+privy=1

The sole example was a 1998 Titanic privy for $250 or best offer.

in most cases. For the 'best in class' ones like the 69's I can see it having some value. In general, while I do like to know the grade of my NCLTs I'm not willing to pay extra for that information.

those numbers mean nothing, they are bullion coins, the only way to get a high price for the so called MS67678585, is for someone to buy it, and I cant understand why someone would, silver melted is silver melted....well if you like collecting them good for you, exemple you are gona buy a ms70 silver maple for 250$, you can get 7 maples for that price...the question is do you want to make 0$ on your MS70 or you want to make 350$ for your maples (if silver prices is 50$). I dont think those MS coins will appreciate that much in the future....my Two Cents
