I've amassed most of my collection through lots on ebay, but I can't see much coming out of sorting through all the junk coins. Obviously, I don't mind if there's some quality in the set.

Where is the best place to buy coin lots/individual coins based on price and quality?

PS: Unfortunately, I can't lay down a lot of cash. I don't exactly have a regular source of income.

Sap may be able to 'chime in' on this thread.
He has a large, varied and interesting collection covering a wide field in numismatics.

I also have the same sort of collection as Sap's but is much samller
I deliberately expanded my interests to cover ALL coins all centuries, all cultures, ancient to modern, up to about 1950. That way, there is always something of interest for me in the market place.

Such a collection naturally is strongly represented with coins of the 19th and 20th centuries, simply becuse they are far more available. The vast majority of coins in my collection would have a value of les than $15 each.

Most of my collection has come out of dealer's junk boxes marked '$5', '$10' '$15' or '$20' in coin shops, and coin shows. I have also been a regular subscriber to two regular postal auctions for many years, where I will buy coins estimated anywhere from $5 to $500 each. I only make one or two purchases at around the $500 level, each year, however. These auctions now show their material 'on line'.

Some of the coins I have bought decades ago for around the $500 level are valued at a LOT more than that now.

For postal auctions, I always pay by money order. Cheaper than checks, and not much more expensive than credit cards. Debit cards may be even a cheaper way to pay. With a debit card, it is much easier to control your spending, and keep within a budget.

Typically. I might add anywhere from 50 to 100 coins to my collection in a year. That has been my pattern for buying coins for more than 40 years now.

I never buy on ebay.

I have tons of world coins ranging in countries, grades, denominations and years. Most of them have come from bulk "buying by the pound" off of ebay. I have gotten quite a few very nice coins in those batches. My goal was not to expect a high dollar coin, but to get a good assortment for my collection.

I recently went to a coin show and there I hand picked some of the ones that I wanted in the grade I wanted them in. I would not have gotten those in bulk off of the internet.

I guess it depends on what your goal is. Is it to get the best grade in certain years from particular countries? To collect a coin from every country? Is it to make the best set you can from certain countries?

To me, the fun is getting bulk coins and not knowing what will be in there. One 5 lb. batch I bought from ebay was filled with Australia and New Zealand coins. Another batch had a few Isle of Man and Newfoundland coins. One batch had about 30 tokens in it, which was unusual for what I had been receiving. You see my point. To me, it is the thrill of seeing what I get, looking at them, identifying them, cataloging them, and then storing them where they belong.

I have seen a few ads in the Coin World Magazine at great prices and no need to even go to ebay, but I have not tried them yet so I do not know to what degree of variety I might get. I know there is always a chance that I get tons of Mexico or Thailand coins, but if I don't hand pick them I have to take what they send and hope for the best.

Good luck! I just love looking at the various designs on the different coins from around the world and then researching where that "crazy named" country is located. It might just be me, but I find it all fascinating.

By the way, if anyone wants to get rid of any world coins, please throw them my way! I will gladly accept them.

If you are going to buy poundage, you need to vary your sellers.

Also, try flea markets. I've found a lot of coins at garage/yard/estate sales too but you have to ASK. At such places coins are normally not placed out on display. They tend to wander off. However, if you ask, you might be amazed at what is there.
