Hey all. I've recently started working on getting one or more examples of each early commemorative. Here are what I've got so far. Let me know what you think of the coins, grades, anything, really. Can't wait to see your responses!

1920 Pilgrim - I have two photos of the obv, I couldn't decide which one I like better, what do yall think?

Welcome to the US commemorative collectors team! I think it's great that you're starting to assemble a classic set.

Do you have a target grade for each coin in your set? I think nicely matched sets of coins of roughly the same grade are always attractive. It appears you are assembling a circulated set based on your pictures -- Correct?

Here are a few observations:

Pilgrim: I'm always concerned when I see green on a coin as it could mean PVC damage; I noticed a green spot on the obverse below the portrait and on the reverse at 3:00 o'clock. I would have a knowledgeable local collector or dealer examine the coin to determine if there is any concern and (if there is) make suggestions on how to prevent any further damage to the coin.

Alabama: Appears to be a nice example with some honest wear. I don't see any real issues.

Stone Mountain: Same comment as Alabama.

Texas: Same comment as Alabama.

Lexington-Concord: It appears that there are a number of hairline scratches on the obverse and reverse -- these could be the mark of an abrasive cleaning in the coin's past. As with the Pilgrim, I would suggest a local expert to view and provide an opinion.

Monroe: Same comment as Lexington-Concord.

Sesquicentennial: Same comment as Lexington-Concord.

Please understand that it is difficult to grade coins via fairly low resolution digital images, but I've tried to give my impressions of each. You're off to a good start with your collection, but I would suggest pausing for a moment to get a good book that discusses coin grading. I want you to stay enthused about building your collection and would hate to see you acquire potentially problem coins.

Good luck!

Commems, thanks for your input. I think that the hairline scratches you are seeing are on the 2x2s. I will have to yank them out and re photograph them to make sure of what's going on there.

As per what I'm putting together, I don't really have a specific grade that I'm looking for, just a decent example of each of them at this point. I know full well that I will end up upgrading many of these coins and I'm not only okay, but happy with that (once I do I can stop worrying about the lower graded coins and hold them in my hand bare).

On note with the photos, when I get back to my place next week I will find a place for the full resolution photos, these things are monstrous, about eight Meg's ach. I had to use an image resized too enable myself to upload them where I am at now.

In the coming week, or whenever I can find a decently priced macro lens I will get above noted photos up so we can take a better look at what's going on, again thanks for your input.

Steve

Would enjoy seeing photos of them out of the 2x2 ... agree with Commems that I'm seeing hairlines.

Great start on your set ... hoping to see more coins from you as you grow it.
