Hello,
I used to be an avid coin collector years ago, and knew that there were no 1976 S Jefferson nickels put into circulation. (proof only) I was surprised to find that I received a 1976 S Jefferson nickel in change from a vending machine...it doesn't look like a proof coin to me. Any info would help

It was originally a proof coin. But the proof look wears away very quickly when they are circulated. It's a sad fate for a proof coin.

Glad to hear you saved it!

It would be interesting to see how it looks?

And it is definitely a proof nickel.

Once a proof, always a proof, since proof is a process.

However, condition can change. A circulated proof will wear down just as a business strike does.

Regardless, you saved it from further ruin! Nice find!

Usually the proof process willleave telltale characteristics that are visible even after extensive wear. Namely the rims on these are square and even. There will also be detail in protected areas that doesn't normally get struck on circulation strikes. On nickels this would be some of the hair detail and the windows on Monticello.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

They tend to keep their proof look a lot longer than people think.

Squared rims and sharp strike. He looks like a proof to me.
