I would appreciate help nailing down the identification of this token, and maybe find an image of one in better condition. Dated 1884, S.MIER & CO The photos are a fair representation of what I am seeing. But I can not find a comparable coin. It looks like a town in "IND.", (Indiana?) but I can't find a town by that name.... Thanks in advance.

It is an 1863 Civil War Token issued by S.Mier & Co.,Ligonier, IN. It is listed as Fuld#550E1a, Rarity 4. Not worth much in that condition.

Thanks. I can see the name of the town now that you say it. Oh for a stack of reference books...

I am working my way through the plethora of web resources regarding the FULD numbering system, which I am gathering is a "die" cateloging method. ... and struggling a bit. However, I did find this image by Larry Moran on flickr which he said is IN550I-2a ... so this would be close to the original appearance of the Reverse of my 'find'.

There are a total of 5 different store cards that this merchant issued. With 3 different Revese designs (#1083, 1089, and 1091) and two metals, copper and brass. Larry's pic above is reverse 1083. The link that follows is a treasure trove of information on CWT's. Bill Lutjie of Michigan has compiled a amazing amount of data. You can see the section showing reverse designs here> http://home.comcast.net/~bluitje104..._List_12.htm Just select the revese # section using the above numbers to see all the designs used.

Indeed Bill. Members get a discount. I recommend these two for getting started: Patriotic Civil War Tokens (Fuld) 5th Edition, 436pp Hardcover Non-Member Price: $35.00, Member Price: $30.00 U.S. Civil War Storecards (Fuld) 2nd Edition, 650pp Hardcover Non-Member Price: $100.00, Member Price: $85.00 Membership is $15.00. The total discount for members is $20. Therefore, it's cheaper to join the CWTS and also buy the books at the member price at the same time. Here is the correct page at the CWTS for joining and ordering: http://cwtsociety.com/books.htmlI know that it is tempting to try and find info online, however, in the long run, I recommend acquiring the books. You never know when you might come across a specimen you really like, want to purchase it, but don't have the time or opportunity to surf about it on the net. Good luck.
