This appears to be a Potosi 1 real piece. Weight 3.4 grams and date seems to be 176?. Any help.

Mike

Yes, the center bottom of the grid is the date. It looks like 766 to me (1766)
The top right part of the grid (and bottom left) is the essayer, considering the date and my books (and what we see) - this looks like a V.
Which sticks well to the Potossi mint (where a P should appear on the top left and bottom right) - maybe we see a bit of it in the bottom right.
The cross side should have on the bottom the date (which I think I see partially), and on the left the mint mark (p), on the right the essayer (V)

Your coin is in a pretty good condition for this type and denomination !

Thanks Mathieu, I suspect a 1766 date as well as the last number seems to have no top right fill. My Calico shows 1760 through 1769 as possible dates.

I can't compare to mine, I have one from 1764 (with a much weaker strike - but wider planchet)
This clearly isn't a 8 (or a 5) - it's 1766 for sure :)

Yeah, date is "(1)76_" ... last digit looks like 6, making it 1766 (which I find to be a frequently seen date in this series - they seem to pop up a lot). That horizontal thingy at the top of the digit (at first glance) looks like a top bar for a "7" (maybe even a "5"), suggesting an overdate... but on closer inspection, I think it's just conveniently placed planchet weirdness.

Note that your cross side needs to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise... this gives you the "P" mintmark mostly clear on the left (a bit more of the P should be there on the nubbin you cropped off the pic) and clearly shows the upright tail of the lower left kitty cat, proving the proper alignment. The rest of the cross quadrants are a typical late Potosi Mess... note that those twigs sticking up out of the thing at the lower right are apparently supposed to pass for lower spires. Compare the lower R castle on this 1766 8R:

Wow, that 8 reales is awesone :)
I have two dates on mine (1767) : the left part of the grid side (as this one), but not the extra date on the edge, and on the other size the bottom date and the left mint mark.
