I recently found a 1909 S VBD in a bag of wheats I bought. After checking in care and using a 2010 RedBook as a guild, I think the grade is between a vf20 and a vf40. Certainly I am no grader and only a novice collector at best. After talking to a local coin dealer here he say's vf20 but I think he's probably trying to low-ball me. My question is should I have this coin professionally grade and what service is the best?

First of all, welcome! That would be XF-40 by the way. Absolutely this coin MUST be authenticated. It is heavily counterfeited. You can send it to ANACS as they are the most cost effective and you can submit directly to them. Do not sell this coin until you get it back from the TPG. Let us know how it turns out! http://www.coincommunity.com/us_sma...eat_cent.asp

Just to give you a second opinion, I agree with vermontensium on all counts.

I agree with those above me. This coin must be certified by either PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. To submit to PCGS or NGC, you either need to be a member of their respective clubs or submit through an authorized dealer. With ANACS check if they are attending any shows near your area and you can submit your coin there. Anyways, congratulations on the great find!

Welcome to CC!
There are a lot of fakes out there. Don't get too excited until you figure out if it's authentic.

, L Reynolds! I'm surprised no one suggested . We could help with the grading, and whether it needs conserved before slobbing.

Thanks everyone for your comment. First let me say, I am pretty certain this 1909 s VDB is no fake,as I said eariler I have already shown it to a local coin shop here, had it been a fake I am sure he would have said so. Secondly pictures did cross my mind, but unfortunately for all of us my camera is not sufficent enough to take very clear (detailed) photos. I tried but I could not even read the date with my camera. My next thought was to take it to a professional photographer. If anyone else has any suggestions I am certainly open to them.

1st 2nd 3rd A reputable TPG service is a must for that coin. There are diagnostics about the date & mm that many here on the forum could use to give you a pretty good idea as to authenticity. 4th biggfredd-I too would be "slobbing" if it was my coin and it was real.

Ok, I figured this out, for some photos I just scanned the penny. Not exactly the best method as it does not quite show finer details, but it works. Now I just need to figure out how to up-load the photos.

And as already said, have it sent to a TPGS. This doesn't mean you have to keep it in the slab, just that now you know it's real. If your going to keep it in an Album, don'r worry about the grade, only that it is real.

I'd say vf because Abe doesn't seem that strong.
I would definitely go for conservation. They may be able to clean up the black areas.
