I am starting this thread for anyone interested in the wonderful world of the shield "and my little passion" feel free to post questions pictures and I will help the best I can I got this one from the us a couple of days ago .. posted on the 11th .. Bit slow eh! It is a 1869 wide date with a IIb reverse and this is what I saw in the sellers picture.. as far as I can tell the 18 of the date is re-punched to the north with the top of the showing and possibly the base of the 1 showing on both sides on the shank (picture not showing the left hand side very well) I have been through Fletcher and cannot find anything on this coin .. F-102 has a north RP on the 18 but the top of the 8 is not as near to the ball .. F-108 has almost an identical die crack through the 8-6-9 as mine but RP on this one is 69 south.. So in conclusion and up for discussion here is ? have I Cherrypicked a unrecorded RPD from ebay ? or is there some other answer to this coin Die crack markers in blue (I can find no die cracks on the reverse) The only marker I can find on the reverse is ? Die polishing marks to the bottom (marked in yellow) and a very thin to the C almost like the so called "rat tail"

I have no sheild nickels so very little to contribute to this thread. I am always looking for the right one to add to my type set but they are so expensive for what they are. Hoping to find a common date nice example soon, maybe then I can contribut further than just saying that yours are nice. :)

Thanks for the nice comment hermanwilliams what kind of grade are you wishing for.. the 1867 and 1968 are good ones to look for in good grades but it is still hard to get a "good value for money" one from ebay as most are overpriced for the grade the seller says they are .. but you can find them it just takes a lot of looking .. if you see one post me a picture and I will try and grade it for you Hear are two more shields for you all .. one is "normal" one has something special going on .. can you see which is which

Agreed ... welcome dooly ... great post and outstanding coins. This 18 year series (1866 - 1883) is filled with a great variety of fun and interesting coins as the US mint was beginning their experience in striking Cu-NI coins of this diameter. Die cracks ... re-punched and over dates ... and in general great fun can be found in the series. Curious how a member across the big pond comes about so many USA Shield nickels? How far along are you in the set? Looking forward to more photos of your set. David

Hi in reply I have been collecting them for a good few years and have been a member of the NGC collectors society since 2006 . as for the collection .. I have a full dansco 7070 but I do not collect "the series" as such I am more into the "Errors" and love the 68s and 67s .. but most of my stuff is in NCS and NGC slabs and I cannot take photos of them.. so its just kind of the recently purchase stuff I will be putting up hear ..

Well picked this little number up of ebay last week Love the sellers sideways pictures and was very cheep Well this one came supper quick this morning 5* to the seller .. and you guessed it it's a Cherry  my picture the cherry is a RPD on the 2 in a North direction the closest I could find is F-14 but that is punched on the 8 & 2 and is further away from the ball .. and this coin has been verified as a New unrecorded variety Obverse Die markers for this RPD are die cracks marked in blue Reverse Die markers are .. Die cracks marked in blue and Rim Cud marked in red

Some nice and unusual coins there. For some reason those type of Nickels are not really popular. At coin shows I seldom see more than a few and usually not in great shape.

dooly, you can "acquire" the NGC images from their website, even though you cannot "right-click" their web pages, you can obtain them from the "temporary internet" folder.
