Just got a 1964 dime in change from the gas station's automatic coin dispenser at the checkout 4 days ago - they actually have to load very manually and it's easy to rim check everything... but they didn't get that one!

Nice!

I'm guessing you live in a rural part of the United States? Am I correct?

A cashier-friend of mine who knows I'm into coins recently held a 1926 SLQ for me. I was pretty surprised she found that! But I guess the point is it happens from time to time.

Oh, and I'm in a pretty heavily populated area.

But that was intentionally saved for you. I'd expect you'd be more likely to find a cashier who doesn't know [or care] about the true value of the metal in rural areas, or at convenience or gas stores spent by thieves who break into a coin collection and don't know there's any value to a coin with 1964 on it.

In Canada sometimes you get lucky with 1968 dimes and quarters, since some of them are 50 percent silver [I think many Canadian coin collectors don't know that and the 50 percent copper in it makes a less high pitched 'ching' noise], although the 80 percent silver versions of the mid-1967 and earlier are nearly impossible to find.

Very, very, very, very low.

That being said...I also found a 1964 dime in pocket change last week. I don't know what store it came from as I noticed it later. The four had a peice of gunch over it so I almost missed it myself. Someone posted on here in the past few days that he received a Franklin half in change from the grocery store. Posted pics and everything, pretty worn, but still awesome.

Anyway...chances are that it will never happen again.
I'll keep looking though.

The other day I heard that familiar 'ching' in the change of the man in front of me at a store [I've handled a lot of silver], I don't think he noticed and I had no such luck.

Before I started roll hunting, I did pick out things like wheats and silver coins any time I went through and cashed in my coin jar. Over about 10 years I found six silver dimes, one of which was a Mercury.

I find an average of 1.5 per box of 2500 dimes when roll searching today.

I go through about 30 dollars worth of small change with my job everyday. I find silver maybe once every 6 months. This works out to one silver coin for every $780 in change.
