Hi guys. I am no expert on Colonial American coinage but want to own a Fugio cent. There is a listing on ebay for one in my price affordability and it has plenty of pics. The seller says it has an odd looking edge and if you scroll through the pics the edge does look odd. So if this is fake I believe he is probably off the hook.

Is anyone here a member of EAC? or specialize in Fugio cents? that is willing to look at the auction and tell me if it is real?

Thanks :)

I know what you mean, these are on my bucket list as well. HOWEVER, something about this "strike" and wear seems off. If it were me, I would not purchase it. I am looking forward to the experts to chiming in.

I wasn't having a problem with it until I saw the edge picture. I'm not sure what is going on there. I'm wondering eletrotype that got lost and buried? I don't know, it MIGHT be real but I would want to know the weight and I would probably really have to see it in hand.

Its hard to say with those pictures. With this kind of coin, I would only buy one off ebay if it was certified.

I am not a Fugio expert or even a Fugio amateur, I just happen to live in the same city as THE Fugio expert(Eric Newman). However, that edge immediately made me think of an electrotype with a corroded seam. An electrotype would still have some value but I doubt one in that condition would be worth anything near $250. I am not saying it is definitely an electrotype but the edge is suspicious.

IMHO, it appears genuine; perhaps, machined for some reason? Many early coppers were long ago subjected to similar abuse for myriad reasons. Regardless, this appears to be a respectable type coin for a good price.

Note that the seller has a fine track record, and judging from his ebay "handle", he's likely an EAC member, himself.
