If you can't see the date, there is know way to know the value over melt. Though It's a type 2 SLQ.
Maybe someone knows a way to acid date the last 2 digits. if it's a 23-S, you might have something there.

I have one of those. How would I raise the last two digits of the date, and would it work on the many dateless Buffalo nickels I have? Thanks.

There are many threads on CCF discussing dateless SLQs and the consensus is that there is no credible way to restore dates on worn-out coins. You can use vinegar or Nic-A-Date to restore readable dates on many worn buffalo and even Liberty-head nickels but that technique will not succeed with silver coins. If you can't discern at least the final date digit on your quarter it is just a silver bullion coin.

Quote: that technique will not succeed with silver coins. You'll just have a black mess. Bottom line: Your coin is silver bullion.

Unfortunately all those dateless SLQ's are only worth melt.

Don't forget, not all dateless are worth only melt. The 1916 (which is of acourse a type one coin) is worth just a bit over melt.

I expect there is a way to determine dates on coins such as this through some type of non-destructive density analysis or something, but it would not be very practical and would require very expensive machinery.
