Was at some antique stores yesterday with my wife and came across this Trade dollar packed away in a baggie in a corner. I asked how much and they said "$42?"

I don't really know enough about detecting fakes, so the ones I've bought so far was either slabbed or from a dealer I trust that knows his stuff.

Hope someone can give me a yay or nay on this guy. Most likely its fake, but for $42 might be worth the try.

The edge looked good to me, I didn't count the ridges, but they were sharp and consistent with the wear on the coin.

Well, considering there were only 5 1885 Trade dollars struck and we know where they all are....it's kinda obvious this one's fake.

Right, It wasn't magnetic, and I didn't have a scale but they had a common circulated morgan that I did a by hand comparison with, felt right. I was planning bring a scale back with me anyway to be sure.

Oh and I blew the old couple's mind when I asked them for a tissue. lol So its at least coated with silver. :D

Aye, fake. Date's wrong, details are mush, and like SuperDave said only a handful are known to exist.

I'd have offered a few dollars. :-)

Hey man, you never know, it's possible that a mint employee mysteriously made a sixth 1885 Trade dollar and snuck it out to live a life of secrecy until today!

Did anyone realize that there are only 13 stars on the front not 15 stars?

tissue test.

13 stars huh.

I would go back and offer for a couple dollars, but its an aggregate antique store. So the owners of the merchandise only display it there with a set price. They carry inventory for around 40 dealers.

I asked what their cut is and they said 12%.

I need to get in on that.

I once previewed a group of these counterfeit Trade and Seated dollars at a combination coin/gun auction. There was an 1885 in that group, too. I told the auctioneer, a gun dealer, that the "coins" were all fakes. I could tell that they were underweight, and I suggested that he confirm they should each weigh 27.22 grams, consulting his Red Book to confirm the weight. He said he would.

I later learned that the auctioneer sold the "coins" without cautioning the bidders. The brother-in-law of an acquaintance of mine "invested" over $3,000 on some of the "coins." He declined my offer to testify in a small claims action. He was too embarrassed ....

Aside from what was mentioned, the first thign that jumped out to me was dots instead of denticles at the 5 o clock position. And the right hand looks awful mushy, no finger details. THEN I noticed the date. LOL

I would like to see the "15 Star" Trade dollar. All the ones that I have seen have 13 stars.
