I tried to scratch it off but no luck, its metal gunk of some kind. Speaking of cleaning coins, I know its bad to clean in any way if your collecting it but I have coins that I dug up with a metal detector and I want to clean off a little without destroying the coin, any ideas? I heard that baking soda and lemon jiuce works well but I thought that may damage the coin.

I honestly dont clean anything unless its just a temp hole filler for a book .

But if I do , all I have used is Acetone and water ... I know other maybe better to point you in a direction to clean something more drastic but all I have used is the acetone and water combo ..

I would still think this is some form of glue or something , but again thats just my guess ..

What do you think it could be? From what I can see in your pictures I see Dried on glue. Now maybe that's what it is not on the coin but that's what the pictures show

I bet it's hardened glue. Whatever it is, it's not an error.

The pictures may give it a dried glue look but when the light hits it from an angle, it looks like metal. It also feels like metal not plastic.
