How uncommon is this variety as I picked up 8 1950s and found 5 were close to the rim and 3 were close to the dot

Krause refers to them as you did by the KG location. But to me there isn't a huge difference for people to notice the difference between them. Nz coins books refer to them as a die #1 is "close diamond" & die #2 is a "far diamond". 3.6 million were made, but they don't have split numbers of each die. The position of the diamondsin reference to KG is an easier way to spot the 2 die varieties. The far diamond is valued higher
