Hi guys

Obviously my American friends will know more than me, soooo, is it normal for this 1956D mint mark to be this high as compared to the one next to it...?

Thanks

Prior to the late 80s mint-marks were applied by hand to each die with a puncheon, so the position varies a lot. The '56-D position is not unusual.

Until 1991 all mint marks were hand punched onto the dies. This created a wide variance in positions of the MM....so yes your cent is normal.

They are hand punched and can be anywhere under the date and right of the bust. Being hand placed they are usually not always in the same locations.

I believe the is a die of the 1956d where the MM actually touches the 9. Mint workers stamping the MM on the die on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon were prone to missing the target!

1990 was the first year they stopped hand punching MM's on to the dies. Up till and through 1989 the MM was hand punched.

If you find one that's abutting or running into the other
devices then that one is a keeper.
