Got this from a melt bag 2 years ago. I paid $1.80 for it.

As it is the first coin you see in my Merc Dansco, I would love to hear your opinions.

Thanks!
Rest in Peace

It's hard to tell the exact grade from the small size and grainy quality of the pictures, but it appears to be MS and FB to me, and I like the toning.

I apologize about the pics..but I had to resize them for the forum. And my Camera does not like to take pics of dimes and pennies! The bands are easily split when seen in hand. Like two loaves of bread

Captain Fwiffo, what does FB mean? I don't know much about American coins other than the silver value, and a little about Morgans. Thanks
Rest in Peace

To elaborate, Mercury dimes often suffered from striking problems. One particular area is the center bands on the fasces on the reverse. There should be two completely separate bands, but often they're only partially split, or not split at all, or completely flat. Mercury dimes that show two completely separate bands are designated "FB" or "FSB" and carry a premium. Sometimes they're just barely split (there's just an incuse line separating them) and sometimes they're fully split and rounded, which is best.

Some dates are relatively common with full bands (1916 is usually well struck and has full bands) and others are rare with full bands. An ordinary 1945-P dime is about a $20 coin in gem condition, but it's rare with full bands (perhaps only a few hundred known) and sells for thousands.

Great pick up for $1.80. Another one saved from the melt bucket!
