Thanks, Spider. I have company in this as others are either closing in on their 1000 oz. hoard or already have it. It's a milestone, alright, but is likely to be just one of several for most of us. I keep having this thought crawling around in my head about, "if 1000 oz. is good, would 2,000 oz. be better?".  |

Ed_B: I like to put eggs in different baskets, Au and Pt are much easier to carry around when need to. Besides, don't you like the beautiful color of gold?   |

Congrats on 1K. Big achievement! I might be an outlier but I actually prefer silver, except moving it all. Though I definitely like the pic :)

I looked at 3 different on-line vendors last night for 10 ozs. of gold as 1/2 and 1/4 oz. AGEs. I like the silvery stuff a lot but am leaning towards some gold for the next addition... and there won't be anywhere near 1000 oz. of that coming my way! Ed what are your feelings on the amount of fiat cash and what type? Also how much to keep in a bank? Just wondering. With all the direct deposit and watching of cash used just not sure what to do! Again lucky you and with PMs dropping more again a good time to buy! Thanks!

What works for one may or may not work for another. I can only speak for myself on this. In fact, I have done a very poor job of this and am ashamed to admit how much fiat my wife and I have in our local CU. It's WAY more than we should have. I do know at least that much.  My biggest problem is that my wife is pretty protective of "her" money. We do have hers, mine, and ours as far as fiat is concerned. She inherited a good chunk of money from her Mom, who passed away in 2009. The good news is that I do keep some fiat in my safe in case we ever have a bank holiday or other financial disaster that cuts us off from our funds. Right now, that amounts to maybe $3500 or so. These bills are $50s and $100s. I am strongly considering ordering up $2000 in $20s and $1000 in $10s, though. Smaller bills could certainly have their uses. If I were doing a better job of this, we would probably keep about 5-10% of our money in the CU as cash for bill paying and immediate spending needs and the other 90-95% would be converted to gold. That would be more sensible than holding all this fiat. Have to work harder on that and present some convincing arguments.  Yes, PM prices are down right now and it would be a good time to "buy the dips". I am looking at buying some gold, which has just dropped below $1600 for the 1st time in a while. |

congratulations ed. I have been working as hard as possible this year to discover bargains where I can. between all the out of the way antique shops I hit up in the country and a few lucky storage unit finds I am closing in on 400 oz this year. 1000, that will be a nice day.

I started with zero in 2008, but after finally taking the advice of a writer on a site called survivalblog, which I highly recommend, I just kept buying on a regular basis. Now I'm sitting at 933 oz. and counting. It's just a matter of perseverance and prioritization.

Thanks, SS. Your hoard is also coming along very nicely. By doing some careful shopping at a number of different places, you probably have a lower cost per oz. than I do. That adds up over time with either less fiat spent or more ounces acquired. Either way, it is good! |
