I have a One Cent coin that, although appears to be in good shape, is missing the C in Cent. I see no evidence of just that letter being scratched off.

When the coin, however, is held at a certain angle with the light, a faint C does appear. My suspicion is almost that of the C being stamped, but with no metal there. Can anyone shed some light?

I tried my best to take pictures of the coin without the light hitting at the angle, and with it, so you can see the missing and faint C.

One of two possibilities exist. First the recessed area of the die that was the C could have been plugged with grease or something causing the C not to strike up. Second, the die might have been at the end of it's life and in the process of collapsing in that area, again causing the C not to strike up

Thanks for the input DBM and Dan, and also thanks for the welcome wert.

I am planning on keeping the coin, but just out of curiosity, anyone think it is anything special, or just another old coin worth a couple bucks?

It's another old coin worth a couple of bucks. If the coin was high grade with the issue then you might have a coin that variety hunters would chase and pay a few bucks more than normal, otherwise not so much.
Rest in Peace

, mike35!
Most likely caused by GOD, not likely more than a buck or two.
