I think it is a Spanish coin, not Byzantine. The design in the first photo reminds me of those found on old Spanish coins and plus it has Latin letters, not Greek ones.

Definitely not Byzantine. Its pretty worn. Coat of arms on coin looks like Hungarian to me.

Hungarian would make more sense, as the coin came from a hoard found somewhere in Eastern Europe, perhaps Romanian?

I have few Hungarian coins from same period in my collection but all of them also in bad condition. Some of them are hard to attribute because they dont have any inscription just coat of arms and cross.
Have you bought whole hoard or just one coin?

It was from a hoard of 250 mostly Roman coins

Strange You dont find Roman coins along with 16 century coin in same hoard. Maybe it from two different hoards.

True - I will occasionally run across some 10th and 11th century pieces, but only once have I found one from the 16th
