Can Anyone Identify This Japanese (I Think) Coin?

Found this in my local coin dealers box.
Looks like it has a Chicken on one side and a temple on the other. I suppose it might be a temple token as I can't really see a value on it. I think it is Japanese but the Kanji for "Japan" looks a little weird to me.

Japan indeed, it is a "full blown" coin, 5 yen. Dated Showa 23, i.e. 1948.
This type was minted two years only, '48/49, and it was a part of the reform coinage, first issue after the defeat in the WW2. That may explain any "unusual" look about it.
The bird most likely is a dove (of peace).
