I've been looking at dealers in the city I'm moving to and one of them has three hammered pennies listed in his inventory: two Edward the Confessor and one Henry III.

I was wondering if there were any good online resources for pricing these coins so I can get an idea as to whether or not I'm looking at fair value for the coins should I choose to buy.

I sent an email asking for photos of the Edward pennies - he lists them as Edward the Confessor but dates them as if they were Edward Longshanks, so I'm hoping to get an ID on just what he has before I do anything. The dealer's expertise is in Swiss coins, so it may be that he is just ignorant about Edward the Confessor and Edward I being different kings.

I think the best way to find the value of a hammered coin is to search the current 'for sale' lists of the main dealers' 'Net offerings, and compare the prices of near equivalent coins.

CoinArchives.com is probably good enough for your purposes; it's a database of prices realised at recent auctions. You'd have to pay $600/year for full database access, but the last six month's worth is free to access. Just type "Edward confessor" or "Henry III" into the search line and dozens of each will come up; coins of these kings come up in auctions frequently enough to acquire a good data set, even in the six month window.

Thanks, Sel and Sap.

Judging by what I'm seeing on CoinArchives, I should be getting a good deal either way. Here's hoping that when I see some pictures they're what he thinks they are - I'll be getting a very good deal if so.

Edit - Just got emails of the hammered pennies. The Edwards are Longshanks, not the Confessor. They're still listed at a good price compared to the ones I see through Sap's link.

Might just have to get them.
