These are my last three small cobs. I believe they are all half real Potosi but could use some help. Thanks, Mike

#1 - Seville, Spain half real, Philip II (undated). Weird irregular shape for this issue (looks like as made)... these are almost always found very close to round. CORRECTION - this is actually the DATED version of the Seville Philip II half real. With the "square D" mintmark, it's probably 1588. Note that you actually can see the "1" and "5" of the date aligned sideways to the right of the monogram. Also, looking at some reference pics, the Seville Philip II dated 1/2R do usually seem to have irregular shapes, as opposed to the earlier undated version which is the type that was usually quite round.

#2 - Potosi (1)75_ 1 Real (last digit 0?)

#3 - Potosi (16)76 1 Real... interesting doubling on pillars side, something you see occasionally on 1670's and 1680's Potosi minors.

Note that with only a single scarce exception (the 1652 only transitional pillars half real), pillars-style was only used on the 1 Real through 8 Real for Potosi/Lima. The half real was always a monogram design. Same idea holds true for Mexico and Spain mints, with the shield design reserved for 1 Real and up, with the half real bearing the monogram.

Note that the Roman "I" denom. is plainly visible on both of your pieces at the top middle square of the pillars tic-tac-toe... and the second "I" is also clear above the cross of the 1676.

Occasionally, you will see a pillars 1R that was clearly chopped to half real weight, or is down almost to that weight from wear and/or shaving... but that's not how it started its life.

Thanks realeswatcher. Very good information from you as usual. I can see the details you mention now and the weights verify the values, 1.6, 2.7 and 2.2 grams respectively. These ones are well worn and or shaves as clearly a third of the weight has been lost, unlike the 1/2 real piece which is only a tenth gram light.

Thanks again, Mike
