Is there a way you can discern between a SMS coin and a regular mint issue coin without having to buy a SMS and breaking the coin out for an album?

No definitive way, as I have found some SMS year halves that were polished up to look like SMS finish, you could only tell under magnification. If you get a "proof like" coin that doesn't have tell tale polishing marks under magnification, it is likely SMS.

At best it will be an educated guess. You have to find it fairly soon after it being released to the wild for it to have enough of the look to make that guess.
