I was reading up about this scallop coin and noticed people are commenting on the mintage of this coin is 19,888 and the certificate is much higher. Has the RCM issued new certificates or is the mintage actually higher? Also, from the 3 coins issued, which one is the more popular one (ie. tiger, rabbit, or dragon)?

Thanks for your input.

The certificates list what the maximum potential issue will be. If the mint doesn't receive enough orders then they don't mint all of the coins and the actual number ends up being lower. The mintage numbers I have listed for the scalloped versions are Tiger: 48,888, Rabbit: 19,888 & Dragon: 48,888 so maybe what you're seeing is the Rabbit # vs the Tiger #?

The Mint messed up the certificate on the Rabbit. They re-issued certificates stating the mintage is really 19,888. The mess-up created quite a backlash at the time.

I have noticed the price of this coin is fetching over $250. Why so much money?

I believe, can answer about the popularity of these coins.
Wanted to buy only the Dragon (due to my birth year) and got it from the Mint for $98, much more later - 3 month ago, I decided to start collecting all this series, amazed by the design of the coins - the animals characters made so real, and all the space of the coins have been used.
So, the facts:

2010 Year of the Tiger (Sterling Silver) - got for $120 + shipping
2011 Year of the Rabbit (Sterling Silver) - $157 + shipping

I was lucky to find the Rabbit for "low" price, but searched and waited for it couple of month.

Added:
Have no idea, what caused to high price (probably the mintage), but need to notice - actually for long time I couldn't find any of Rabbit coins.

@ Silveroid, that's an excellent price you got for the Rabbit. I have been following it too, and it's trending for over 200-250 easy. Hope I can find a 157 special :-)

I found this series probably as the best among all Chinese calendars coins. Love the design, and the price on new issued coin is reasonable.

Only the mintage is too high.
I didn't do the subscription in 2010 and now regret - the box is really good.
