So today I was off on jury duty at the county courthouse and I went to get a snack from one of the vending machines.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the machine took $5 bills, but even more pleasantly surprised to find that all of the machines took $1 coins.

In fact, nearly all of them had stickers on them stating "Tired of crinkled bills? This machine accepts the new Presidential dollar Coins." with a picture of the George Washington coin next to it.

The irony? The smallest chunk of currency I had on me was a $10 bill. This is rather rare, as I usually have $15-$20 in dollar coins on me at any time.

The relief? Someone broke my tenner into two 5s for me.

The bonus? I got back dollar coins (and one ATB Quarter) in change. Off they go (except for the ATB Quarter) to circulate somewhere else. :-)

In Boston, if you got change from a train fare vending machine, you got it in dollar coins. So if you just needed a single ride, $2, and only had a $20, you got $18 in dollar coins. Needless to say, this did not engender much appreciation for them.

First that I have heard about a vending machine taking anything higher than a $1 bill...or was it a change machine? I have seen those take up to $20's.

@wquinn - It was a 2010-P Grand Canyon. The reeding's still red and shiny, it hasn't seen much travel. :-) Apparently, all municipal vending machines in my county have had to accept $1 coins since the Presidential series by some obscure policy. It's working out rather well.

@oih82w8 & @sheeptotherescue - An honest-to-goodness vending machine. Bought a bag of Sun Chips for $1.25, got back 3 $1 coins and 3 quarters. They had some larger items available for $2 so taking $5s was well thought out. That way you avoid "slot machine change syndrome" that could happen with larger bills. A $5 bill is just the right size for it to work as $1 coins were intended: Conveniently, not encumberingly. :-)
