Did you find it or was it a purchase? Looks like it has some gunk on the obverse, but all in all not a bad coin. About the only way I'll ever own one is to find it in a bank roll or hit the lottery. Either way it is more than 1 in 175 million chance, but I'll keep looking.

Its a VDB but the discoloration around the date and MM may be of concern. A close up of this area would be helpful. May just be the pic?

The colour looks odd to me for a 100+ year old copper coin.

I found the penny in a jar. I know the photo is poor. I am trying hard to improve my photo and posting skills!! And no I did not buy the coin, I was given the jar of pennies. Thanks in advance for the comments. I will try this weekend to take better photos with a different set up.

The coin is dirty. I really don't know if I should try and clean it. Any thoughts?

The MM looked to me to be really low, until I compared photos, then it looked correct... the VDB is center-left, which is right, but the color does look odd... Calling BadThad! BadThad where are you?

don't clean the coin I was reading an article and it said if your gonna wipe down a coin use a soft cloth and wipe it down in one direction in a circular motion. Is this a good way to get dirt and finger oil?

Harshly cleaned and slightly retoned. I'm 99% sure this is a fake. A close up of the date, MM and VDB would be helpful. The S doesn't look right, the 9's are funky and it has the look of some of the fakes I've seen in the past.

Is this a good way to get dirt and finger oil? Don't wipe or rub a coin at all if you can help it. If you want to remove oil or foreign material a rinse in acetone is the best way to go. Use the search function in the upper left to find instructions on how to do it, it's been discussed many times.

A little hard to tell with those pics but the MM doesn't look right. While the font may be correct the position seems off. Also can't really see the VDB either, a closer shot of it would be helpful.
