And I can honestly say I have never seen anything like that. Hey Fuzzy, what is a counter stamp? They actually stamp some coins when going through a counter? Weird !

It's "counter" as in alternative. Some retailers counter-punched coins to be used as advertising or discounts in their places of business.

Some counter-struck coins were done as souveniers or novelites. Some have the states struck on them others have sports teams. There are all kinds.

There are number of catalogs that identify early punches and their producers.

Others were done by someone playing around with a punch set.
