I know I was suppose to be on a 30 day hiatus from buying any coins, but I couldn't pass on these two Augustus coins from Colonia Patricia (Cordoba, Spain). I visited Cordoba last year about this time. It's a fantastic place if you ever have the chance to visit. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to have a couple of coins from Cordoba, so here they are. The first is an Æ 25 As, RPC 129: OBV: PERM CAES AVG, laureate head left REV: COLONIA PATRICIA in two lines in wreath 8.07g, 24 mm The second is an AE20 Semis, RPC 130: OBV: PERM CAES AVG, bare head left REV: COLONIA PATRICIA, apex & simpulum 4.08g, 20 mm Both coins were struck 19/18-2 B.C

It's very cool that you have a couple of coins from a place you visited 2000 yrs after they were in hand there!

I like the details on both--Roman provincials from Spain have an interesting style. Aren't provincials of Augustus often more affordable than imperial coinage of the same era?

Not bad coins at all. Hopefully you got a good price on them as well.

Quote: Hopefully you got a good price on them as well. What do you think? Of course I did. At least I think so. $41 for the two including shipping. Cordoba is a very nice place to visit. Roman ruins everywhere. Roman columns have been appropriated by individuals and used on the corner of their buildings as kinda like "bumper protectors" A lot of history in this town. This is also the time of year they have what is called "Patio Fest" where individual homes are opened to the public to view the fantastic gardens in the Roman style patios. I can't stress enough that if the opportunity presents itself, you should take advantage and go.

JW: Nice coins. Nice to get hold of some nice ancients on a regular basis.
From where do you source a lot of your acquisitions?

Quote: From where do you source a lot of your acquisitions? sel_69l: I have a few dealers I have dealt with on a regular basis on Vcoins, but also a very few regular and trusted sellers on ebay. There are two ebay sellers from Spain I communicate with along with sellers in other areas of Europe. I also have a few contacts in areas where I travel for work, i.e., Venice, Croatia and the Czech Republic. All my trusted sellers deal in Roman coins. That is why I don't have a good feeling when looking at Greek coins. If I had the same trust in dealers of Greek coins as I do with the Roman coins, I would probably spend way too much money. I have provided a list of my trusted sellers to others on this forum via private message and would be glad to provide the same to anyone else.

BTW I am going to the Florida Keys this summer. Any coin shops (venues) that you suggest? I think that you are in the FL area. I collect early US coins, shipwreck, old spanish, old british, and of course ancients.

I've been to Key West half a dozen times, and it's not one of my favorite destinations. Too many people and too much tourist junk. I can recommend Mel Fisher's Atocha museum and store. The museum part is very informative, but the store is very expensive in my estimation. Try Sloppy Joe's for a good burger. Be prepared for some hot weather during the summer months as well as the big storm possibilities. Other then that, have a great trip and enjoy Florida.
