I have some 25 ore coins dated from the 1960's. They have " Danmark " on them, although I am sure the ore is from Sweden.
Can anyone explain why "Danmark" is on there.
Many thanks,
Sheen

Danmark is simply the Danish word for their nation. Nearly all coins bearing "Danmark" were minted there, although some Norwegian coins from Kongsberg say "Dansk" or "Danske" when Norway was a territory of Denmark.

Yep, my wife is from Denmark. Learning the language. Pretty tough but I'm getting there :-)

Ore was/is not exclusive Swedish (Sverige). Other countries with this denomination:

Denmark (Danmark)
Faeroe Islands (Føroyar or Færøerne)
Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat or Grønland)
Iceland (Ísland)
Norway (Norge)

If we're going to be accurate about it, they are different spellings.
Sverige: -re
Danmark, Norge, Grønland: Øre
Føroyar: Oyru
Ísland: Eyrir

DVCollector, where have you got the "Oyru"-information from? All my books use "Øre" for Færoyar (or "Færøyene").

I thought also I shold mention "Aurar" is plural. One eyrir, two aurar.

Litotes, thanks for the correction. You're correct, I should have used Eyrir.
As for the Oyru, I ran across the word on some "trial strikes"
I don't know Faeroese; I just assumed it was their word.

DVCollector, you are probably right in that this is what they would call their own coins. However, they have yet to make any - save the trial strikes. Instead they use Danish coins. A few of these have been minted especially for them, then with "Øre" given on the coins. These are very similar indeed to the proper Danish coins of the period. I have one of these for my OFEC-collection.

Many thanks everyone for the replies. I've only been coin collecting for a couple of months and have found the most help I have received is from this forum.
Thanks.
