Quote: You can always post pictures of the coins you are interested in on the Forum before you bid. I am sure you will get some knowledgeable advice. I agree with this. I'm 23 and started collecting early 2010. I got bad deal after bad deal on ebay. I started posting auctions here for advice before bidding. I stopped getting bad deals. lol. And do you ever use PCGS Photograde to help you grade? It has high quality pictures of every grade for comparison. It helps me a lot and if you used it you probably would have been able to nail that ebay coin at a VF grade. Here's the link anyway: http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#

VF-25/30, $25-30 coin and the surfaces look suspect based on those pics.

I've dealt with Coinman before and he's a good guy. You need to judge the coin from the pics and make you're own assessment. Kind of like how they say to buy the coin and not the slab.

Lol murrellington, I am 20 and will be 21 in July but I literally just spent every penny (no pun intended lol) to get that 1931-S for 160.00. Won't be buying any more coins for a while!

You should not be buying coins. I don't appreciate how you state that you "got ripped off". You sought out the coin on your own behalf and decided to bid on your own behalf. You had everything available in front of your own 2 eyes to judge for yourself what the coin is worth. People like you are making ebay a dis-pleasure to use. Jacking up prices for serious buyers and then putting sellers through heck just because you think "you got ripped off" and now you want a refund.

Learning to grade well, is very important before buying coins. Don't be impatient. Take the time to learn and it will save you lots of dollars and headaches in the long run. Good luck.

That was pretty harsh jerseyben. Yeah I think that "ripped off" was not the right words because it was his own fault. But show a little consideration. He's a new collector and when you spend way too much on a coin, you feel ripped off. The first coin I bought was from a coin shop and it was Labeled AU and I paid $120 for it. I posted pictures here and everybody said XF-AU details and said it was probably worth $35 to $40. Yeah I felt ripped off really bad, even though they didn't make me buy it. I eventually sold it on ebay and got about $30 for it after fees and shipping. I just think that he needs to learn from this mistake. If you overgrade a coin and buy it at a higher price, it is your own fault. I think he has realized that, in that he just bought a graded Lincoln Cent, meaning he is getting the grade he is paying for.

When I read jerseyben's post I said "ouch, that's harsh" But there is some truth in there.

I understand and it was a mistake. I am new to collecting and the feeling of being ripped off or spending more than what something is worth is not a good one. On the other hand, the seller was very understanding and was easy to work with. I understand that you are mad and that you think I'm "jacking up" "YOUR prices", but you must understand that there are many people out there looking for the best deal, and even more NEW collectors out there that make these mistakes and do get refunds on ebay. He even clearly stated that if you do not like the coin in hand, you can return it for a full refund. I am not out to mess up anyone else's auctions, but fact of the matter is that the auctions are for everyone and if they want a refund, then they can get a refund unless stated otherwise. It was a mistake and I understand that the world frowns upon mistakes. However, no one was created perfect and we all make mistakes, it's whether we learn from them or not that matters most. That is the reason I am on this forums, asking questions, and voicing my opinions on things. TO LEARN!

Quote: and even more NEW collectors out there that make these mistakes Exactly! Almost all of us overpaid for coins when we first started collecting. Without this forum, he may have liked the coin for that price because he would not have known any better... But with our help we can accurately give a grade and retail value. Knowing you paid double or triple for what a coin is worth is very heartbreaking when you at first thought you got a good coin. Point being, lesson was learned here. We can move on and Casutherland can enjoy that new 1931 s Lincoln Cent he bought!
