So I was bringing some boxes down to my fiancee's uncle's house today. It's an old farm that her grandfather started in the early 20th century, and I've always felt that it was full of hidden treasures. Anyway, her grandfather died earlier this year and we have been given the grandparents' room for our use when visiting or, as we will be beginning next week, while we live there this summer. After bringing in the last box of the day I decided to sit on the bed and rest a moment when I spotted something black and round under grandpa's dresser. I thought I'd just found an old, very worn penny. Turns out it was a dime. The front was so covered with dust I couldn't even see the date, and I couldn't even clear the dust with my fingernail. I turned it around and noticed what looked like a mint mark on the back, so now I knew I'd found something. Took it to the bathroom and ran it under some water to remove the layers of dust. Now I can read the date it's a 1960-D. Nothing special, but it's still a silver dime. The things you find when looking around old houses, eh?

Nice find. I wouldn't be surprised if you found more old coins around that farmhouse. If it were me, I would be checking every crack and crevice.
Good luck!

That's the plan. We'll eventually inherit the farm, so there will be plenty of time.

I have heard of many stories involving money found in walls and floor boards. If you ever decide to gut the house, I would suggest doing it yourself, you may be one of the lucky few who have found a few treasures hidden away.

My wife found a gold 25 kurus 1/20 oz. bullion coin behind a wardrode, apparently lost and left behind behind by the previous owners of our house. It had a tiny suspension loop hard soldered to the edge of it. I guess it must have been part of an ear ring or bangle ornament.
She gave it to me. She does not wear ear rings or bangles.
The loop broke off easily, and so the coin just took it's part in my collection.

Quote: 100 year old farm = metal detector Excellent idea. 100 years of an occupied property that probably has never been searched. The possibility of finding something old or made of silver is high.

Perhaps someday on the metal detecting. Don't own one or have money for one yet and my fiancee thinks it sounds a bit silly. Someday, though. I found a small box with some coins my fiancee's grandpa had saved - a 1944 UK half penny, a 1953 Canadian dime, two silver Canadian quarters, a mid-30s Bolivian centavo, one 1926-S Peace dollar (very worn), and four Morgan dollars (1921, 1892-S, 1890-O, and 1879, varying degrees of wear). They're going to stay put and not get added to my collection yet. I think my fiancee's uncle is a little fond of them, so they'll sit for now. The two of us are the prospective inheritors of the farm, though, so eventually they'll join the rest of my coins.

More likely a great way to find old barbed wire, but even for a small chance of silver, I would try it.

Nice going. My wife came from a farm and it was many hundreds of years old. The farm house was so old no running water, no sewers, etc. One pot bellied stove in the main room and that was the heating system. I used to go there with her to visit and looked all over for anything and usually only found spiders.

I used to tear down houses (built my first house fromt them). One was a old country store. Some nice silver stuck under the floor molding. My son just bought a house and the floor was covered with change. Nothing great but did find a 1950D LWC and a 1940 Jefferson. Nice find!

I live in a house built before 1880. I've replaced a lot of lathe and plaster doing upgrades and the only thing I've found so far is an old beer bottle in the wall. I put the bottle from the beer I was drinking next to it and put the sheetrock up:)
