Hi , I recently started a coin collection and I have just been collecting any coin that is pleasing to the eye but I'm trying to find a book/coin album that guides me as to what coins to collect. I think that being told which coins to collect in order to complete a series would be more fun than just getting random coins. I have been looking at whitman folders but unfortunately they no longer make british ones only american ones for american coins :( .
Please can someone suggest a book/coin album that would tell me what coins to collect
Thanks BritCoinCollectr97 .

HI,

Welcome to CCF

This isn't really a helpful reply but ----- nobody can tell you what to collect - only you know what makes the hobby fun for you. If you are looking for some sort of album with cut out spaces for UK coins to be pushed into - I don't think one exists. You can still have an extremely focused collection without one however - you just need to make up your mind what it is you want to collect and stick to it.

Random additions will always occur however - at least they do with me - that's half the fun.

Yeah, I'd say make te hobby follow your interests rather than trying to push yourself in one direction, especially at the beginning. Just see what makes you want to pay money for.

For example I like making modern sets of world coins, I have big Spanish, German, UK and Austrian sets with other countries having from quite a few coins to perhaps one, as I travel around I pick up more things that take my fancy.

Others like to collect only for their country, either circulation or proofs or whatever.

But if you do something and you aren't interested there is no real point. The only goal at the end of the day is to make yourself happier.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like what you're really after, if the "Whitman-style album" is no longer available, is a checklist catalogue, so you can see which dates were issued for the coin types that you're interested in. I'd suggest the Rotographic catalogues; they're small enough to carry around with you wherever you go, relatively cheap, and comprehensive enough if you have little interest in collecting pre-1800 coins.

You can also check this website. http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/ The history and pictures section for each denomination are worth going through to get you started.
