Wowser. Never knew termites had teeth strong enough to eat a die.

Fine pieces of wire have gotten between a coin and the die face on previous strikes and have damaged the die. The die gouge line is OK, but that would have happened, probably due to accidental damage before the die was fitted to the press.

The possibility of termite damage is another fair explanation, but their covered tunnels would have to have a reasonabe metallic content to withstand the striking pressure.

Strong termites!

Hey SuperDave, is it possible it is like on zinc pennies, some gas or air trapped under plating?

Just die gouges. Even a clash would make these. Here is an overlay:

Not a struck through wire as the marks would be incuse. When they are raised it is a die issue.

I am not Dave but the gas pockets are usually round in nature and are very common to see on zincolns!

Gas pockets are not necessarily round in nature, they can also take the form of linear plating bubbles..however,they occur on plated coins such as the Lincoln Cent, not the clad coins.

All you need is a little more experience

Plus, I might add that you can edit your posts if you forget anything.

It is funny how some people are so eager to point out things like misspellings and other LITTLE things like "not always circles" Some people are just so rude and have no class!
