hello all,
the reason I joined this group is I found around 100 coins or so from 1874 to 1958, pennies to silver dollars stored away for 40 or more years.
the question that I have is
a) are they worth any money ?
b) who do you trust that you will get good value
c) keep or sell them ?

a) it really depends on what you have and in what condition as to what their worth is. b) after you answer "a" do some research on values http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php is a good place for price "GUIDE" c) if you enjoy them, keep them.....if not sell them.

To start off, I think you should post pictures in the appropriate forums one by one and then let the forum people decide the coins' worth for you. If you really have a lot, I suggest you buy a Krause or Subscribe to numismaster.

I am getting mixed up a little bit.
I posted a pic in another post and got some mixed revues.
I have another question. if I was to take a coin to a dealer will he grade the coin or give me a false grade to reap the true value of it?

If there are Canadian, assuming, most are, you may want to invest in a Charlton numismatic book , around $20.00 very comprehesive. It sounds exciting, it would be great fun for any collector to go through a pile that was set aside over 50 years ago.

It must feel great to get a find like that in your hands! Hours of research--all the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of organizing it. Good luck with it, and let us know how it goes. Thanks.

first of all thanks MrCanada for the advice
I did go and buy the book
it seems like my 1893 quarter is worth something I am not sure how to go about from here. do I have to get these coins sent away to get graded?
and if I can get my silver dollars straight with all the different varieties the 1935,36,38,39,47,50,51,53,58 wll try to keep you updated

Quote: Do I have to get these coins sent away to get graded? Short answer, no. I would not bother to send in your coins to be graded, unless they are in an excellent state of preservation (i.e., lots of details, mint lustre, etc.). To address your original questions: Quote: a) are they worth any money ?
b) who do you trust that you will get good value
c) keep or sell them ? a) yes, your 1938 and 1947 dollars will definitely have value above the silver content. For the other coins, it depends on their grade, but they are definitely worth their silver value. However, now is NOT a good time to be selling silver - unless you have to. b) I see in your profile, that you are in the Winnipeg area. You will get your best price from another collector, not a dealer. Selling on ebay is ok, but be prepared to pay 10-12% on fees. Some collectors here might offer you a decent price, but you need to meet a certain threshold of posts, before you are allowed to sell them here. c) Well, if you have to sell, wait until September - that is usually one of the stronger months for silver prices. Any coin of value, like your 1893 25c, expect to get 40-50% of the book value from a dealer. Your best bet would be to wait for the Manitoba Coin Club Show, held November 3-4 in Winnipeg. There, you can bring your coins, and get three prices quotes from any number of dealers, and choose which dealer to sell to. Be sure to seek out the "numismatic dealers" versus the "bullion dealers" at these shows - their display cases usually are a good clue. George Manz is a fair dealer, and attends that show.

Take them to a coin dealer and tell them up front that you're not interested in selling, only that you want to know which are worth handing down to your heirs, and to give a rough RETAIL estimate of what they might sell for in his/her shop. Talk to them without really talking business. If they don't have the time for you, move on. Some dealers are like that - trust me it's normal.
