I first want to say that my experience in searching through banknotes is limited so any input on what I could do differently is appreciated, I thought it would be interesting to share my system with you guys and maybe you can share yours in return.

Here is my system for Canadian banknotes:
I check all my notes 3 times. The first time I go through them I look only at serial numbers. I find it takes more focus for this part so I would rather do only that.

The second time I check them I look at the side of the banknote where the serial number is, but I check for the watermark, if there's any inconsistency there, then I check for segmented foil-like security strip on the left if it shows the correct denomination and then I check the general appearance of this side of the note to see if anything is unusual. Also, if there are parts that are folded, I unfold them.

The third time I check the side of the bill with the portrait. I look at the thick holographic security thread at the left hand side if it shows the correct denomination/colour. Then I check the top right corner if I can see the maple leaf and then I hold the note towards a source of light and I check the right hand side of it if I can see the shadow of the whole security strip from the other side. Finally, I check for any general inconsistencies on this side of the note.

You're being extremely thorough which will probably reward you at some time.

I have a limited amount of time to search my daily stacks. Usually, I have about 20 minutes to half an hour to go through approximately 5,000 banknotes so I concentrate my time on checking serial numbers.

I know a lot of the prefixes that have produced mismatched numbers (you can find this out at the Canadian paper money forum) and other errors so when I come across those, I give them a closer look.

Then I flip through the notes to look for printing error.

I keep binary radars, and repeaters and rotators to use as traders. I don't bother with non-binary radars since I come across so many. I'd be spending more than my income saving them.

Keep doing what you're doing if it works for you. I'm sure everybody has their own system for searching.

Yes, I do spend a considerable amount of time doing this. I'm trying to be thorough and somewhat fast at the same time. I'm assuming you only do this when you're at work ?

Yes. That's because I have access to a large number of banknotes (and coins) each day. The only thing I do on occassion, is swap a stack of very worn notes for newer ones at the bank. Once in a while I'm able to get a brand new strap but that's very rare. The banks we use are neighborhood branches and they have a tendancy just to recycle notes they receive rather than ordering new stacks.

Over the last four years, I have found 14 error notes and countless fancy number notes. Most of the fancy number notes are traded to other collectors who specialize in those. I prefer the errors.

I'm sure I've missed a few notes because of the speed I go through the notes but I don't like thinking about that.
