I found a couple of 2011 20 cent platypus coins (just the normal platypus) whilst noodling. Any ideas on the mintage of this coin?

This is unknown territory atm, as the only 2011 20's minted by June 30 last year were all commems.

While it sounds like they're still minting 2011 platypus', I'd be inclined to hold a number of near mint state ones until final mintages are released.

As for the 2011 commems, mintages (as at 30 June) were;

Womens Day (not the mag) 6.723 million
Will & Kate 10.025 million
Volunteers 1.5 million

The IWD could be considered low mintage, and I would think that figure represents a final mintage due to the following releases.

Thanks FNQ.
I have a few 2011 commemorative coins found through noodling, all found over the same time period.

Will and Kate 310
Volunteers 10
Womens day 110
platypus 2

Based on these relative numbers it would suggest that Will & Kate will end up significantly more then the 10 million (more like 35 million) but the volunteers coin is probably about right (I'm comparing numbers found to that of 2001 federation 20 cent coins with mintages of 2 million, found over the same time period.
This would also suggest that if my assumptions are right then there would only be about 300000 2011 platypus coins.
These are off course just eductated guesses and I may be way out.

TheCoinHunter,
I do similar comparisons to guess at mintages
:)
A couple of considerations for you.
1. When newly released coins are added to the pool they are not yet uniformly spread out, so they could appear quite common in some places (particularly in the rolls/bags they are added in) and rare in others
2. The 2001 coins have been out for a while and have been taken out of circulation by collectors over that time. Maybe a comparison to a more recent not collected date would be good to do?

Thanks ozcoins.
Taking those 2 point in consideration I did another comparison with the numbers of 2003 20 cent volunteers and got similar numbers ( I tried finding a coin I collect that is not that popular for collectors).
I use these figures to get a rough idea whether or not a new release coin is worth holding onto. I think the 2011 platypus and 2011 volunteers coins are the ones to hold onto.

Hi Fuddpuckers,
Interesting how it works. In NSW it appears to be 10 or 11 womans day to 1 volunteer.
Does anyone from the other states have a ratio of 2011 volunteers to 2011 womens day?

I would say its much closer to 20:1. I would be lucky to find 2 womens day per $100 of 20c and could easily find 25+ volunteers.

Not that I'm keeping either of them but its interesting how it works.

Thats interesting, because in Melbourne the Volunteers is quite scarce and I was beginning to think that it might be a very low mintage. The Womans Day far out number them in my noodling.

I know this has been brought up before but it would be very interesting to "tag" a sample of coins to see how much they mix through the nation or whether they are pretty much confined to the area they are released.

Those damn, pesky NZ 20c! I stopped removing them and keeping them when I had 50. At first it was fun trying to noodle a set of them but now they infuriate me

The UN are hard to find but I have a feeling theyre one of those coins that have been heavily horded and at one point in time there is going to be a mass flood of them in fantastic grade. I've stopped keeping them... are other still holding them or just not bothering?... maybe I should be still?
