Agathokles of Baktria (the same guy that issued the nickel with the panther I showed in my favorite coin thread the other day) silver tetradrachm which would be worth a couple thousand dollars if it were real but it is not. It seems that we have been seeing an increase in Baktrian fakes since the US has had soldiers stationed in the areas where these should be found. If you doubt my word (and I am no great expert) you will need to invest the money to get a David Sear certificate stating I am wrong.

Thanks for the information, I focus on U.S. coins myself, I was just looking this up for a friend. This coin does not appear to be made of silver, bronze maybe, I trust your opinion but will give my friend the option of getting it looked at by a professional.

With Doug--there sure have been a lot of Baktrian coins of dubious authenticity.
The style looks off--compare to this silver tetradrachm of Agathokles.

Silver plating would make it appear a TINY bit more authentic!

What else could I do to confirm that this piece is in fact a fake? This coin was given to my friend by his father in law who served in the Korean War, I would like to be 100% sure it is a fake before telling him to give it to his kids to play with.

Just do a screen dump of the images presented here to your printer.

So none of you would spend the 40 bucks to have this examined (David Sear certificate)? I still like my U.S. coins but this is interesting.

I have a good collection of fake coins.

I need them.

I learn how to defend myself against them, by a close examination of them.

I only suspect you'll hear the same from David Sear. I would save your money to buy yourself a nice coin.
