I never play the crackout game, mainly I just don't have the experise nor funds to do this risky adventure...BUT...I could NOT resist an ICG Graded 1948 MS67 Washington quarter, I bid roughly 2 grades lower, and won it for less than 25 dollars. I'll crack it out, and send it to NGC(I have a free account for submissions via my ANA Membership), and, see what happens. Since they opened in 1998, and not like 1987, THAT should help a bit, in my thinking, as standards were higher, and, hopefully, their hiring was top-notch...I'd like to hear your crack-out ICG stories, if you have time please, good and bad. The old rule of thumb I was taught was the TPG's other than PCGS grade 1 to 2 grades lower than if sent to PCGS..things have changed, and, you really need to know what denominations each company grades spot-on(talk to any Eisenhower dollar collector, and, they will prefer Anacs over all the rest) I mean, the guys at ICG have their reputation(and guarantee) to protect, so, maybe 1 grade off would be a nice swap...if it comes back MS67, I'll buy dinner for any of you CCF-ers in my area(McDonald's OK, if 200 show up?) So, I'm playing the game...odds are against me, I know..... Cal

My experience with ANACS is that they are great for varieties and for grading one point higher than PCGS. That said, I always consider ANACS varieties as the best numismatic buy in the hobby.

If anything PCGS grades a point or two lower now than the others.
I have no experience with IGC or NGC but I would much rather have an NGC coin. Good luck let us know how it turns out

basebal21, that's pretty sad, but, I've heard that too...everybody has stories from each company, good and bad....what ticks me off is market value, when selling things off...the KING, PCGS, always still commands top dollar, for the most part, and, Anacs slabs sell for much less(unless, as stated, the Eisenhower guys KNOW an Anacs coin is spot-on, and, well worth top dollar)..it's part Politics, and Big Money that runs this crazy market...as a collector, I just want the best company to do a spot-on job, that's all......I'd like to see a poll of which TPG is the best for what denomination, as a whole...I know VAMMERS Hate NGC, for all the mistakes, but, I'd like to focus on the POSITIVE side, and findout who does each coin the best...TRUE Hobbyists/Collectors are THE best source for this, thus, all of you in here have valuable feedback to contribute for this heavily-opinionated area of collecting.... Another side here...as a rule, for my personal collections, I really don't prefer slabbed coins(especially the NGC, with the distarcting white prongs holding the coin...YUKKKKKK)...since I am poor at best on grading skills for MS coins, I buy slabbed coins more for understanding where a company draws the line for a grade...so I can get a rough feel for what I can afford in modern coins....MS65 is usually more than adequate for my desires...when I can splurge on a key-date, and a buy the best grade I can, I do.....slowly, I have learned it's the key dates in a collection that float the boat...and, worth investing as much as I can, as they will always be the ones with the best future value price....another thing I'm learning is what year & mint have good strikes...THAT is a challenge all unto itself.... So, if anybody wants to chime in on which TPG they feel slabs what denomination to their satisfaction, feel free to post....

I mean I get why PCGS does it which is why they do fetch the premium they do, but it still is annoying if you try and send coins in on your own, which is why I now just get stuff already slabbed. As far as their grading goes for modern coins at least anything you get from them I would be very confident is at least the grade listed, and depending how it was submitted may in fact really be a grade higher than listed.
I do have to agree though, the more I look at NGC holders the less I like them. One thing I do love about PCGS is their clear holder which to me really puts the coin on display, where the White holder of NGC is kind of distracting and having the white grips on the coin isn't a good look to me.
Personally I would love to see the grading market condensed with something like PCGS buying out NGC and have ANACS just stick to older non modern coins. Some people think competition is good, but I think it makes it more confusing, and makes it harder to tell a true population of the coin in that grade having to check the different companies ect. If the two big boys were the same company then the same standard would be used across the board. Others could run grading companies if they want but they wouldnt be major players by anymeans. 1 standard for everything by the same company in my opinion would be the best thing that could happen to improve grading quality and to eliminate a lot of the politics of grading. From what I've herd basically any perfect 70 cross over to PCGS and probably NGC will almost automatically become a 69 so they can say they are tougher graders and their standards are higher.
