I am new and through Google found this place and I know some folks here could help.

First, I have collected coins since I was 8 and that is a long time ago. Anyhow my wife and I have started coin roll searching for silver and other than the first day (got the wife hooked:)), we have not found much. I am searching halves and we have found some NO FG 1982P's. I remember searching for these with my dad back in 1982 and I have about 15 of them now. So I ran across the 1972D variety and decided to start looking and low and behold the wife found one.

I will upload some pictures (as best as I could take) and would like the experts to see if what I think she found is the real deal. She is not convinced and would rather find 1964 Kennedy's but I have told her if this is legit, it is worth more than than 5 of those.

It was on this forum that I read that a 'grease' die version does not count but a polished die one does. This is where I need the help. How do you tell?

I apologize for the pictures but that is the best I could get. I can see NO trace of any initials, even with a magnifying glass.

What do you think? Is it real? I think it matched my many 1882P no FG's...

Please look and give me your feedback as to what the wife found.

Thanks, I saw that but in a magnifying glass it is not there as far as I can see and I have looked. Up close it appears to be part of the leg..

I will try and get a better picture.

My daughters camera is not the best.

That is a great find. I can't see any initials in the photos, but the area is a little dark and blurry.

If you can't see it with a loupe/magnifier, then it is legit.

It was probably a Grease Filled Die. It can happen on any coin. I even once found a 1984 nickel, with no mintmark.

If there is no sign of a mintmark under magnification (10-20x), I don't see how you can tell the difference between a Grease Filled Die and one that is missing the initials from the die? Unless you see some polish marks in the area or other parts of the design are polished off?

Thanks....I have looked at that pic and it looks like a G for sure but I can not see it up close with the magnifier.

Strange but I do think it is the real deal.....

I read somewhere that it is not worth sending for grading and I would agree depending on the cost. I don't think I want to sell it but it would be nice to know.

I will try again in sunlight for a pic..

Sometimes looking too close can make things disappear.

Even through the blur you could see the top of the G. Just worn dies. The FG was there when the die was created until it was worn off or polished off.
