Just wanted to share the latest addition to my classic commems collection. I was a bit surprised by how hard it was to find a Stone Mountain that I really liked the look of. Even just finding examples of the coin at all was much harder than usual with the searches I do. Fortunately after a while I was able to find this one. Im generally not a fan of toning on coins but considering what this coin represents I found the particular toning on this coin to be very fitting. I like to think the front toning can be looked at two ways. Either as the sun setting on a dark day of american history at the end of the war, or as the sun rising on a new day were the country comes back together to rebuild. For the reverse I personally like to think the toning is very symbolic of the smoke from the battles. I like to think of the eagle having arrived either during or at the end of a battle with the smoke clearing from the field watching over it.   |

Its quickly becoming mine as well. I love the Antietam and Lexington as well and really couldnt pick a favorite out of them, but its at the top of my list

Outstanding coin basebal21 ... a tremendous classic silver commemorative design.
This is a favorite of many ... and you newest addition is a lovely example.

I see what you mean when you talk about the toning on this coin. It does remind me of smoke from the battlefield. Very nice, I hope you don't mind me asking how much you paid for this commemorative?
I have been thinking of picking up a Stone Mountain commemorative in a similar grade.

Nickel thank you. If things work out I may have another to share in the next few days, fingers crossed. Spider I got that one on ebay for 400 including shipping. Some of the other ones were running 350-700 if I remember correctly. They take a bit of a jump at 67 but not to bad, but on the internet at least they were almost impossible to find in that grade and I really didnt like the 2 or 3 I did find. I think the 65s ran about 200 as well. If you dont have a preference for which company NGC seemed to be more available than PCGS. My collection started with PCGS though and I guess you could say I am a bit OCD as I want them all to have the same company holders so they dont stand out for any reason other than the coin. |

$400 is a good price considering the low price of these on ebay is $350. Even though an MS65 will cost a lot less money, I would much rather own an MS66 instead. When it comes to NGC and PCGS, I don't have a preference. The only other Classic Commemorative I own is Raw, so either will do just fine. I would have to get my Illinois Commemorative graded with whatever company I choose for the Stone Mountain Commemorative. I don't think that's OCD, I do the same thing. Maybe I am in OCD denial.  |

LOL we can start our own support group. I had 1 NGC modern commem in with my PCGS ones and I just really didnt like it. Thankfully I found that out with the modern set and not this one.
I felt the same way about the 66 vs the 65. It definitely took more time to find the 66 but in the end to me it was worth it. I found this one with the Buy It Now listing which could have cost me a bit more, but after losing out on a couple in auction I didnt want to risk it again. I was happy with the final price anyway. I was pretty close to getting one of the better 65s for the time being until the right 66 came up but hopefully some more get listed and you can find one as well.
I would like to one day get this in a 67 since it is one of my favorites in the set, but dont have high hopes with how scare they seem.
Im very tempted to make a poll to see if we are the only ones who want all our coins in the same slab

It's a good lesson in patience -- it's always better to take the time to find a premium coin vs. just a coin to fill a "hole." Quote:

I have generally found that I more often agree with the grade assigned by PCGS vs. NGC. It's not that PCGS hasn't caused me to wonder from time to time, it's just that I've questioned more coins in NGC holders over the years vs. those in PCGS holders. I got close a few times to just getting one because I do really love this coin and then worrying about upgrading later, but I kept saying Id give it a couple more days. In the end I'm very happy that I did wait. To me at least I kind of attribute hard to find with increased cost in most cases, but I could find high grade Hawaii ones easier than this one, which I was not expecting at all. Quote:

It kind of happened by chance when I started but now I am happy it did. I do agree none of them are perfect but I do tend to question overgrading more with the others. With PCGS at least in the coins I have seen I usually wonder how they didnt get a higher grade as opposed to how that got that grade. I like knowing that my coins are at least the listed grade and some could probably be a grade or two higher if crossed over |
