So I am in the midst of re-organizing my collection (conveniently my holdings are a great stress-test for Numismetrica) and I have come to the following dilemma:
Original US Mint packaging takes up a *lot* of space, to the point that I need to consider getting rid of some of it to free up a few cubic feet in the safe.
The question is: Which packaging should I keep, and which packaging should I toss?
My current rubric (to be implemented) is as follows:
ASE Proof packaging -> Keep.
ASE Uncirculated & bullion packaging. -> Tossed already. They're all in Dansco albums.
Yearly Uncirculated and Proof sets packaging -> Keep. They're rather compact as it is.
Modern Commemorative packaging -> Toss boxes, keep in capsules, keep certificates of authenticity.
Exceptions (keep packaging for these): 1993 Bill of Rights Half 1995 & 1996 uncirculated Olympics commems. 1996 Smithsonian uncirculated. 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar (proof & uncirc)

I have removed almost everything from the original mint packaging and placed the coins in Dansco albums. Notable exceptions are some Prestige Proof Sets (sentimental gifts from mom) and the 2009 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set.
For the freed coins, I did retain all of my OGP materials, but they are in a box that is well separated from my collection.

And there is no doubt that over-thinking -- one of my favorite pastimes -- will be the death of me. :-)

Yeah, JBuck has a great idea. Glad to hear you asked before acting. Some people like the OGP when being sold.

Any reason why you say to keep the Bill of Rights box? I have a couple of those along with some other modern commems boxes I've been debating what to do with them as well

I just keep them in the OGP. I have my mint and proof sets in storage boxes made for them. Danscos on book shelves. Prestige sets simply stacked in the same area the other storage boxes are. I like having the OGP myself. Now, when I take the coins out of the sets, that packaging goes to spend the next millenia in a land fill.

Quote: Any reason why you say to keep the Bill of Rights box? The Bill of Rights commems have a bit of a premium, so my reasoning was "Only worry about OGP for commemoratives with a premium." Quote: I never intend to sell any of my coins Heh same camp here. I'm just worried about having enough room to keep them secure is the thing. My only concern is what happens if I am ever forced to sell any (as it would have to be that sort of situation) and if, in that case, the packaging is important enough to consider keeping.

Ive been told some of the OGP can fetch a nice premium. I wonder are there any sites where you could look that up like with the coin values or do you have to search each individual box to find out

Brown Ike dollars in their OGP
A fellow Eisenhower dollar fan, who is a lab tech for a local hospital with quite a degree in chemistry, told me the Ike OGP causes the yellowish scum so many of them have on them. He blamed PCP. It's the only place I've seen this though. - Jim

I've kept almost none of my O.G.P.'s from making my Dansco's. Just about any OGP that I DO still have...... STILL HAS COINS IN IT ! .....
