 That is awesome to have two business strike sets! Very amazing. It would be awesome if you can show a pic of each key? I'm missing all of the keys from my set. I don't know if I'll ever buy them or not. If you post photos of them, I might print them out and call my set complete?  I consider the keys to be under 500,000 for mintage. I know some places say there are only 2-3 key dates for business strikes, but there has to be more. Edited by wquinn

Wes, if my brain, and my fingers are working right, the RedBook lists 10 Morgans with a mintage of less than 500,000 - 1881CC, 1885CC, 1889CC, 1893, 1893O, 1893S, 1894, 1895O, 1895S, and 1899, and there are seven others - 1878/8TF, 1879CC, 1880CC, 1886S, 1888S, 1889S - 1893CC with mintages between 500,000 and 1,000,000; however, those "in the know" do list only a few of those dates as key date coins, and the rest are listed as scarce, or semi key date coins. Just curious, but does anyone here on the CCF have a complete set of Morgans, including the 1895 Proof?

A 1895 Proof Morgan is really scarce. If anyone does have one, I want to see it.

I am sitting at 60/96 total coins through my Morgan collection. Only a couple keys though. I have the first 5 or 6 CC in Au or better and a 1889 cc F12. A couple of the 93's but no 1893 S yet. This thread has renewed my interest in this set. By the day I die I would like to have a top five ranked Morgan set. Time to get on ebay and do some shopping :) |

Made my day when I read that. Any time a collector can generate, or renew, an interest in a set that they're passionate about, it brings on the warm fuzzies.
Sounds like you're well on your way to acheiving your goal - good luck in your hunting.

I know there are scads of Morgan lovin' folks here on the forum, so, thanks to the forum image optimizer, I was able to reduce, and (finally) post scans in the members photo gallery of the obverse and reverse of both sets of my Morgans (only took me around four months to get 'er done). Not individual coins, mind you, but the dansco album pages - took the obverse scan, and then flipped the coins, and did the reverse scan. If you like Morgans, you can't help but like the pics.

I posted these two scans to show why one should not get in a hurry when cracking a coin out of a slab. Take note of the marks at nine o'clock on the coin after I cracked it out. I wanted to hold it in my hand, grew impatient, and, as you can see, I damaged the coin.....never happened before, and, hopefully, won't happen again. No idea what my impatience has done to the value of this coin - have to chalk it up as an expensive lesson learned because I can't undo the damage; however, the silver lining is it's still a genuine 1893-S, and that's some consolation. Be careful if you decide to crack 'em out!!!   |
