I was perusing the ebay listings for dimes when I noticed a pattern; many dimes were selling for less than melt( when you don't add the shipping cost to the final bid).

Just out of curiosity I looked up the completed listings for 1924 Mercs.

Now I picked sold prices for coins in the "G" category.

In July the price averaged about $5.

In August the price averaged about $4

Today the price is averaging about $2.50

Remember these are sold prices not asking.

I was doing this as I was about to list some Mercs and Barbers and was wondering how much MORE I would be getting now. Frankly I am surprised. Think I will do some more research. Anyone else seeing this?

I just pulled two other dates and came up with the same trend....

I did notice that supply is up about 10 percent over early July. But since when has SUPPLY and DEMAND affected common date pricing? lol

I have been picking Mercs and Barbers up locally in the $2.25 to $3 range since silver passed $30. Before That I was getting them for around $1.75 to $2. I don't do a lot of ebay so I can't say either way on that issue.

I'm wondering whether shipping costs are masking the true sale price. Some sellers inflate the ship cost and I think that gets reflected in a lower sale price.

Are these valuations excluding 1924D and 1924S ?
A 1924 might be worth the same as a 1924D and a 1924S in G, however if collectors of Mercs in say VF-30 might be more prepared to buy a 1924D in G to fill the gap than a 1924.

Are these valuations for the same level of feedback ?
Buyers might pay less for a coin from a seller with 60% feedback than from a seller with 99% feedback.

Yes, I just polled 1924P. I might look at specific grades later. Mind you I was using MY definition of Good, rather than the sellers description. So I pulled up all 1924P as my starting point and went from there.

Melt right now is about $2.50.

Without seeing the listings that is entirely possible. I have no problem with sellers charging priority shipping rates or whatever if they actually ship that way, but some sellers do over charge for shipping to get more money which just ends up lowering the price people will pay for the item

Whenever there is a significant rise in the silver price the market gets flooded with silver coins.
Fantastic opportunity for collectors, Not so hot for sellers.
It's that old Chestnut supply and demand kicking in
