My family and I were recently going through family photos when we stumbled across this picture of my great grandfather in his military dress uniform from WWII. None of us know his story, what regiment he was in, etc, other than the fact that he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

This was my first time seeing the photograph and the medal struck me as very similar to a German Iron Cross. Upon further inspection I saw that the medal on his jacket was fatter than an iron cross. We also agreed it would be very weird for an American to to be wearing a German medal. Upon further googling we found some other infantry dress photos with similar crosses with slightly different alterations of the cross. I figured that it is probably an infantry regimental medal/badge, but we have no clue what regiment he was in. It would be extremely helpful if anyone could help identify what regiment he was in or tell the story behind this medal.

Thanks!

kind of looks like a Marksman Badge, then he would have bars below for types of weapons

Here is what I think http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Armyqual.jpg

Thank you! That does look very similar to it! I would assume the bars beneath it would be for each weapon proficiency. If so, that's very cool!

Also, the other badge that I saw that I said looked similar appears to be a Sharpshooter badge!
