I have this coin in a collection that I've had hanging around for years. Can anyone tell me what it is? The other side is very worn and I can't read anything on it.

Short answer is that it was issued by the East India Company. The symbol you see is called a Bale Mark (like a company stamp used to identify EIC goods).
So why VEIC?
It stands for United East India Company, the U & V were at that time pretty much the same letter.

Others will be along soon to give you a better idea of which coin it is.

Welcome, birdgirl!

What alganbagerap said. To determine what this coin is we also need to know its size.

Found it. With a very distinctive break in the middle of the date, it's Sumatra (now a part of Indonesia). Could be 1, 2, or 3 keping, depending on the size.

Here are some search results so you could see what the whole coin looked like.

Wow, that's very interesting. Thanks so much for the help!
It's about the same size as a quarter, a inch across. My family is from the Salem, MA area which I know has a history with the East India company. I wasn't sure if it is real since it's so old, and I don't remember who gave it to me, other than I've had it since I was about 8. It's hard to see what is on the back, but from the picture of the well-preserved coin I can see that it's the same. Does anyone know where I would find out the value on this coin? I'm not sure if it would be worth much since the back is so worn off. Thanks again!

Hello and welcome.

Here's the NGC databasde listing for the 2 keping, which I think is the closest match to yours. Not particularly expensive, as you can see, especially in poor condition.

Thanks for the info! Even if it's not worth very much its's still very cool to know that this little piece of metal has been around for so long. :)
