Out of sheer boredom I decided to check out a few youtube videos showing people and their PM collection.

Some of the collections are amazing in size and quality.

Then I come across one video of a guy showing off his silver bars and rounds. He has on a pair of cotton gloves.

Then he picks up the first bar to show the camera wearing his gloves. I thought this was a little odd.

He proceeds to examine every round and bar wearing his protective cotton gloves.

I guess he didn't want to get any finger prints on the capsules or cellophane.

I am probably the only person who found this funny.

I tend to never touch my silver coins, myself. But the capsules they're in? Bit neurotic, I think.

I touch my silver all the time. Especially the regular old bullion. It's fun. However, I do I have white gloves when I want to open a tube of the nice stuff to take a peek.

tripncoins,

Mostly just proofs, here. Or art bars. Not much bullion w/out numismatic value in my collection, unfortunately. As you know, those mirror finishes collect anything and everything.

You might be onto something, he didn't show his face either.

Touch some proof silver it leaves a print. Try an clean create micro scratches. In time even if you remove print, the oil from your fingers an more importantly the acids within cause toning. Often unattractive toning will reduce a pieces value down to on silver content....

Milk spots for example are not gonna ruin a piece, but I may look to find some minus spots before I buy some with spots on the Maples for example, if you can even see them via a picture....

An old old pour you can touch, use as a door stop, paper weight, whatever, as you are not gonna hurt it, but certain coins should be treated with precision care, white gloves an all....

How about:
  • Leather gloves, for protection
  • Steel toes shoes for gravity
  • Nitrile gloves when working with acid

Trivia: Why do lab containers have Teflon rims?
When pouring strong solutions, the acid or base either slides back into the beaker or forward into the tube, not dripping onto the table.

I've got each of my silver coins sealed in a flip of some sort, save one ASE that I like to play with and feel the size of it as I squeeze it in my hand

I remove all my silver nclt coins from their mint packaging and put them in 2x2 flips, I them put these in albums.
Some of the mint packaging is really nice with flashy jewelry type boxes etc but I think the coins look a whole lot better together in a 2x2 album and they take up far less room this way

So that the really nasty stuff can be poured without having any dribble down the side of the original container.

As to wearing the cotton gloves all the time when handling PMs... it's probably just a habit that some folks have so that they will not forget to put them on at the appropriate times. Wearing them when they are not appropriate doesn't really hurt anything, but not wearing them when handling the really nice coins might.
