The dark side in me wonders if people with the right equipment(high-temp oven, and decent molds) are melting pre 1982 cents into bullion bars and selling somehow...don't know why this obsession with this lingering question...it seems so easy to do, and not get caught...of course, NOBODY doing it will confess, due to Felony charges awaiting them...
The other thing is I just wish the Government would abolish the cent altogether, except for collector versions, and, allow melting...I'm sure the mining company lobbyists are against this, thus, it will be awhile before this REALLY comes into play.
Just my morning thoughts. I'm disabled(awaiting a new hip, and, my knee pretty much is toast too, making walking/lifting, running my Ryedale sorting copper penny business on hold...those darn 50-roll boxes are impossible for me to bring from truck into trailer.

I've wondered that as well. I work in a brass / bronze foundry and having seen the process up close I can't see how you would make any money on a small scale.

You would need a silica-carbide crucible that costs several hundred dollars plus a heat source capable of generating 2000 degrees F. We burn natural gas and a ferocious rate but of course we also pay a discounted rate compared to a retail customer. Even if you did manage to melt the pennies you still only have 95% copper not the 99.9% you would need to sell bullion bars.
