Good Afternoon,

I need opinions on a dilemma I'm facing. I'm looking to purchase a 2010 American Silver Eagle and I called 2 local dealers who carry this particular coin, one sells them for $5 over spot and the other is currently selling them for $38. Both dealers are not very friendly and I found an online company that has them for $38.40 (that includes shipping.) However, they are currently out of stock. Once shipping is included an ebay purchase would run me about the same so I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I go with the cheaper local dealer and just put up with the not very friendly part or wait and see if the online dealer gets anymore in stock and pay the extra money?

Help

Questions:

Do you have a usual "go to" brick and mortar for your coin and PM needs?

In the case of the $5 over spot dealer, this is the first time you've contacted him, right?

$5 over spot is steeper than my dealer at $4, but I'd go with that than $38 from the other two venues.

The bad attitude you're describing is not unique. I see it EVERYWHERE: the shop so afraid of customers it's amazing they ever unlock their doors. Or it's the shop who can't be bothered with a small sale let alone take time to answer your questions. Or the shop who will talk but insults your intelegence with a commission so high it's laughable and THEN they ignore you when you balk at their price.

Here's the deal though. Some of these shops are worth the effort to try and thaw the cold shoulder they give you. Remember, there are LOTS of bad customers, too. If the LCS has good products and fair pricing, that's all that really matters. I do think it's funny what I find myself putting up with from coin dealers that I'd never tolerate for one second from any other merchant or vendor.

Otherwise, just avoid the crappy attitude and buy online. The online guys and gals DO want your business. The 2010 ASE is still very common so restocking is just a matter of when, not if.

Center Pin -

What is their shipping like though? If it is $6 that is cheaper than anywhere else so far. As of right now Gold Mart does not have any 2010 ASE coins in stock.

I find a few dealers who have an attitude and they are quickly greeted with one right back. As an example, I had one dealer come up to me at a coin show and said " You can't take pictures with your phone" - He ASSUMED I DID - he didn't even ask if I was. He said other dealers are worried. I asked him to stop assuming and to realize that other people in the same show were also using their phones, lets stop them too! He didn't know what to say. I further asked him to literally show me and point out every dealer who assumed this "concern" - which he did, including himself. I mentioned that you have now created a crappy relationship for yourself, and other dealers who are making piss poor assumptions. I assured him that any other client that would be stopping by their table would be sure they heard it from me, and future coin shows from here on out. If you're going to call me out falsely like some little kid in high-school, I'll be sure to let other people know how you "run your business".

I'm sorry you had to deal with dealers that have an attitude, I simply will not tolerate it. Period.

To this day, I still see those same crappy dealers and their broke-back table they use to sell their stuff. I have no mercy as I walk by them and mention to other customers this is a dealer who makes bad assumptions on his customers. Ask me how much he likes that.

And don't buy from those dealers, they're ripping you off.

A lot of dealers are jerks unless they see that you have stacks of paper. I prefer dealing online, plus you are only talking one coin, go to ebay and buy the seller.

Then, like coinwatch says, work with him and see if you can't thaw out that shoulder with your best congeniality.

There is no reason to EVER put up with an attitude of any kind from ANY retailer. If they want my business, which is considerable, they can jolly well EARN it! If they are unable to do that, then there are others out there who do know how business should be done and are more than ready, willing, and able to do it. They get my business and my recommendations to others as well.

As to buying ASEs, I have had good luck with APMEX, Provident, and SilverTowne. All of them are good suppliers of precious metals with great service, very good selection, and quite reasonable prices. I can recommend any of these. Goldmart looks good too but I have not bought from them before. I do plan to do so in the future, though.
